J.R.R. Tolkein created the words ‘dwarvish’ and ‘dwarves’!
J.R.R. Tolkein was a British writer who is now best known for creating the tales ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. The popularity of his books led him to being called the ‘father’ of modern fantasy literature.
In fact, some of his works have changed how we spell things! One example is his use of the words ‘dwarves.’
Since the mid-19th century, it was usually spelled as ‘dwarfs’ or ‘dwarfish,’ but thanks to Tolkein’s books, now it’s more common to see it as ‘dwarves’ or ‘dwarvish.’ Even mainstream dictionaries have adopted this way of spelling those words, and now consider it the proper way to do so!
