The world’s longest concert will last 639 years!
The composer, John Cage, began the concert ten years ago in 2001 at the St. Burchard church in Halberstadt, Germany.
It is scheduled to conclude in 2640 after completing its 639th year. Why was that length chosen? 2001 marked the 639th anniversary after Nicolaus Faber built the first church organ.
Some of the piece’s performances have lasted between 29 and 70 minutes long. The organ is automated and plays so slowly that visitors have to wait months to hear a chord change.
The organ wasn’t even finished when the concert began. Pipes have been added since the beginning and the music is steady due to a blower that gives constant air stream.
