Harris Rosen adopted an entire neighbourhood and by 2010 has paid for 190 youngsters to attend college
After successfully reclaiming their community from drug dealers in 1993, Tangelo Park community leaders met with Harris Rosen, a local hotelier and self-made millionaire.
Rose, along with the Orange County School Board Superintendent, discussed the possibility of a scholarship program for the local kids.
Mr. Rosen ‘adopted’ Tangelo Park and has an ongoing multi-million dollar commitment to the Tangelo Park Program.
The program provides free preschool to all the two- to four-year-olds who live in Tangelo Park. He also pays all the expenses for anybody in the neighborhood who is accepted to vocational school, community college, junior college or a four-year public college in the state of Florida.
By 2010 he had paid for 190 youngsters to attend college.
Since the inception of the program, students’ grade point averages are higher. High school and college graduation rates are higher and crime rates are down. Life time earnings and real estate values have increased too.
Harris Rosen is actively involved with this community and he attends each and every community meeting. He pays the bills and only provides services when the community identifies a need. Funding is therefore not allocated in the conventional way.
Rosen was listed in Forbes magazine as the 30th most generous philanthropist in 2008 in America for having given away over $30 million.
