The Italians have a correct way of eating spaghetti, and if you’re using a spoon, you’re doing it wrong.

It stands to reason that a nation knows the best way to eat the food it’s famous for.

Italians, for example, should know all about preparing, cooking and eating pasta. And therefore in 1982, the owners of three of the best-known Italian restaurants in Manhattan to answer some of the questions people have.

The group consisted of Adi Giovanetti, proprietor of Il Nido, and his wife, Rosanna; Sirio Maccioni, owner of Le Cirque, and his wife, Egi, and Luigi Nanni, proprietor and chef of both Nanni's and Il Valetto.

The first topic was whether you can put cheese on pasta that has seafood. Two of the three said no outright, but the third said it’s really up to personal taste. The other two conceded that in certain cases it’s okay.

Then came the question of how to eat your spaghetti. Do you twirl it in a spoon or on the plate or bowl?

All three agreed on this one: You do not use a spoon to eat your spaghetti. Using a spoon is for children, amateurs and people with bad table manners in general.

A spoon should be placed out, however, to toss the pasta once the desired toppings are added, such as sauce or cheese.
