Ian McKellen, Sean Bean and the rest of the Fellowship all have matching ‘Lord of the Rings’ tattoos!

Looks like this fellowship wasn’t based solely in fantasy.

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ series, nine individuals task themselves with the disposal of a cursed ring.

These men, representing the different races of the novel’s world, were known as the Fellowship.

In Peter Jackson’s popular film adaptation, these men were portrayed by Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Grey), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), John Rhys-Davies (Gimli), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Sean Bean (Boromir), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), and Billy Boyd (Pippin).

However, the bond these actors shared went beyond the characters they played.

To commemorate their involvement in the film, each member of the Fellowship had the Elvish version of the number nine tattooed on their shoulder. Each member, that is, except for one.

According to Rhys-Davies, the cast got drunk and approached him about the tattoos. Not wanting to get permanently marked by someone who had been drinking, Rhys-Davies sent his stunt double instead.
