Steven Hawking was the first and only guest ever to play himself in an episode of the ‘Star Trek’ series
Stephen Hawking has become quite the icon in popular culture and has appeared as himself 11 times on Television or in movies.Quite the achievement for somebody who has never gone for an audition!
He was the first and only guest ever to play himself in any Star Trek series when he portrayed his own hologram for 'Descent, Part 1', an episode in season 6.
Brent Spiner, who played the character of Data, jokingly said that Hawking's cameo appearance was "the most notable moment in television history since Albert Einstein guest-starred on Gunsmoke".
Hawking was taken on a tour of the Star Trek set. When they got to the Warp core he paused and said with a smile: "I'm working on that." He obviously enjoyed his time there because he requested to sit in the captain's chair of the Enterprise-D and of course his request was granted!
Hawking also appeared as himself in the 108th overall episode of the American television sitcom 'The Big Bang Theory.' In this episode Hawking points out an arithmetic error in Sheldon's paper on the Higgs boson that makes the whole paper incorrect and Sheldon faints.
Hawking was also a favorite on the cartoon 'The Simpsons' and appeared as himself in cartoon form on that show five times!
