When filming ‘Lord of the Rings’, Viggo Mortensen hiked to set in full costume for authenticity!
When Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) joined the cast of Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ films, replacing Stuart Townsend at the last minute, he didn’t know what to expect.
In fact, it was his son’s love for the J.R.R. Tolkien novel that made him take the part.
However, Mortenson certainly brought his all to the role.
While most actors are flown or driven to set, Mortenson hiked to each shooting location. Dressed in full costume, sword and all, he spent many days in a row traveling, hoping to achieve a more authentic, well-worn look.
In addition, Mortenson performed all his own stunts, from high-action scenes to swordfights. He worked through many injuries during shooting, all while giving the best performance he could. Film swordmaster Bob Anderson even called Mortenson “the best swordsman I’ve ever trained.”
In addition to ‘Lord of the Rings’, Mortenson is known for his work in ‘A History of Violence’, ‘Eastern Promises’, ‘The Road’, and ‘A Dangerous Method’.
